Joe Izbrand
About Joe
Olmos Park City Councilman

Joe Izbrand is a long-time resident of San Antonio who, like so
many others, found his way to the Alamo City as part of a military
family. Arriving in 1964, Joe attended St.Gregory the Great
Elementary School and Winston Churchill High School. He
received an A.A. Degree in Radio-Television-Film from San Antonio
College and was awarded a B.A. Degree in Political Science from
the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1981.
Joe began a career in broadcast journalism in the late 1970s,
working as a news reporter and anchor for WOAI Radio. After
graduating from UTSA, he became a news reporter at KTRH
NewsRadio in Houston and received numerous awards for his
political and feature news stories. Later, he was promoted to news
director, supervising a staff of 35 anchors, reporters and news
editors.
Under his leadership, the KTRH news staff was a five-time recipient
of the nation’s highest honor for excellence in broadcast
journalism, the Edward R. Murrow Award, and a four-time recipient
of print journalism’s highest recognition, the Society of Professional
Journalists’ Distinguished Service Award.
Joe was elected chairman of the board of directors of Texas
Associated Press Broadcasters in 1994, serving until 1997 when
he was elected to the board of directors of the Radio Television
News Directors Association, a position he held for three years.
Joe was also a member of the board of directors of Crime Stoppers
of Houston for eight years, a member of the City of Houston Local
Emergency Planning Committee, and served on the Texas
Association of Broadcasters’ open government task force and state
Emergency Alert System planning committee.
After working as news director for nearly 10 years, Joe returned to
his hometown of San Antonio, where he is currently senior vice
president at Fleishman-Hillard International Communications, one
of the world’s premier public relations firms. Joe provides media
relations and strategic counsel services to a San Antonio-based
corporation.
Joe is actively involved in the community. From 2004-2007, he
served as a member of the board of directors of Child Advocates
San Antonio (CASA), an agency that provides court-appointed
advocates for children who have been removed from their homes
because of abuse and neglect. CASA volunteers seek services and
placement in safe and permanent homes for these children. He
was previously chairman of the pastoral council at St. Anthony de
Padua Catholic Church.
In May, 2006, Joe was appointed to fill an unexpired term on the
Olmos Park City Council. He was subsequently elected to a full, two-
year term in May, 2007.
Joe has been married to fellow long-time San Antonio resident
Shirley “Sig” Izbrand for 20 years. They have resided in Olmos Park
since 2000, when they began the process of transforming a long-
neglected property, built in 1930 by Olmos Park developer W.C.
Thorman, into an updated and inviting home for their two children,
Noah, age 13, and Ben, age 6.
